Hole No 8 - 323m Par 4
Up out of the canyon to
an elevated tee and a blinding view of the Mediterranean behind
the green. The right side of this split-level fairway offers the
better view into the green even though the fairway bunkers must
be carried on the approach. Club selection is critical on the
approach as there is a 4-5-club variation in pin placements on
this very long green. With prevailing wind quartering in from
the right, it may be necessary to lay the approach shout out over
the right-hand bunker, letting the breeze drift it back on to
the putting surface. Too far left and you end up in a morass of
bunkers down below. This is an intriguing little par 4 which can
be reached by big hitters but which otherwise ought to be played
with caution.
The real feature of this
hole is the ruins of the 18th century olive press and cistern,
which was uncovered during construction. In the middle of the
fairway, short of the landing area, it has been cleaned up and
covered to protect it from the elements. Players should pause
to look at it for its historical and cultural value.
